Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski signed three new tax bills passed recently by the state legislature. The measures will raise the state’s minimum corporate tax, income taxes on businesses and taxes on Oregon’s wealthiest individuals. The bills aim to raise $733 million for tax years 2009-2011. Meanwhile, opponents of the new taxes, led by a group calling itself “Oregonians Against Job-Killing Taxes,” have hired a signature-gathering firm led by former Oregon Republican Party Chairman Kevin Mannix and tax activists Russ Walker and Ross Day. The group is up against a September 25th deadline to gather 57,000 signatures needed to refer the measures to the state’s voters in January.
